President Obama reaches an all-time Low

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Syracuse UniversityScholarship in Action

President Obama received some bad news this week:  A recent Gallup Poll foundthat the approval rating for the president has dropped below 40 percent for the first time ever.  A full 54 percent of Americans disapprove of the job the president is doing.   This puts President Obama into George Bush territory.  Bush’s approval rating dropped below 40 percent in early 2006 and never recovered after that.

Obama Issues Stern Demand for Congress to Pass Job-Creating Legislation

barack obama, black news, african american news, black politics

By JasmineHughes, Your Black World

This past Thursday President Obama discussed the job-creating potential of investing in clean energy. He took a tour of a Holland, Michigan factory that makes advanced batteries for alternative-fuel vehicles such as hybrids or all-electrics.

Obama talked about the benefits of spending money on producing such clean-energy technologies as advanced batteries, which would include more jobs and reduced consumption of foreign oil. He calls them “jobs of the future” and says the U.S. should lead the way in developing energy sources that pollute less.

By JasmineHughes, Your Black World

If you ask White House press secretary, Jay Carney, he’ll tell you that just as most Americans do, Obama needs down time to regenerate and adds, “Besides, the presidency travels with you.” However, in light of the economic turmoil and astronomically high unemployment rate, many are questioning how appropriate it is for President Obama to be vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard next week; a place where the average home can run nearly $1 million dollars.

Kirsten West Savali, Your Black World

In the wake of his perceived capitulation to the GOP, giving them “ninety-eight percent” of what they asked for in the debt-ceiling mis-deal, President Barack Obama is now calling for “political will” from both sides of the isle.

“We knew from the outset that a prolonged debate over the debt ceiling, a debate where the threat of default was used as a bargaining chip, could do enormous damage to our economy and the world’s,” he said in televised comments to reporters from The White House.

Dr. Julianne Malveaux: S&P Downgrade is Beginning of the End

by Dr. Julianne Malveaux

When S&P downgraded the US bond rating from AAA to AA+, they formalized the financial buzz of months, if not years. The US is going to hell in a hand basket, replicating the denouement of England in the mid-twentieth century. Our tax structure, which rewards the rich and punishes the middle class, looks like something from a developing country, and our economic distribution is going to look like that soon, as well. While many are disappointed and outraged that the flawed S&P felt they could involve themselves in the internal meat grinder of US politics by demanding a certain level of spending cuts, the bottom line is that our politicians were willing to take us to the brink on the debt ceiling, and this brinkmanship does not bode well for fiscal stability.

The Arrogance of Being President While Black

barack obama, black politics, racism, african americans

The author of this piece is unknown, but many believe that he is a white male.  It’s interesting, please take a look.

I don't think anyone was under some real illusion that the election of Barack Obama actually means the end of racism in America . I'm pretty sure that the president-elect knew it better than anyone. After all, he saw it every day, from the moment he announced his candidacy. To some degree, he saw it within his own party during the primaries. And he saw it in all ugliness during the general election. For half of this country, he was "That One". No matter how big and clear his victory was. No matter how smart he is. No matter how decent he is. No matter what a true patriot he is. No matter how optimistic and positive his vision for America was. All that didn't matter. Because at the end of the day, he was still black.

In Monumental Move, S&P Set to Downgrade US Gov’t Credit Rating

According to CNN, the Standard & Poor’s rating agency has told the Obama Administration that it plans to downgrade the U.S government’s AAA credit rating.  The ruling has not been announced to the public and it is reportedly being challenged by the White House.  The move would be unprecedented, for the United States has long been considered one of the most credit-worthy financial entities in the world.

Pat Buchanan Needs to Take the Word “Boy” Out of His Vocabulary

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, Your Black WorldScholarship in Action

Pat Buchanan, one of the most divisive political constructs of this century, made an interesting comment about President Barack Obama.  In a recent interview with Rev. Al Sharpton, Buchanan referred to President Obama as Sharpton’s “boy.”

The remark led to Sharpton responding with the kind of ferocity that the situation demanded, telling Buchanan that he needs to respect Barack Obama as his president and everyone’s president.   Buchanan initially refused to issue an apology, but eventually took the time to “clarify his remarks.”

Disapproval Rating for Congress is the Lowest in History

barack obama, black politics, african american politics

Your Black World reports.

The recent debt ceiling debate brought the nation the closest its ever been to defaulting on the country’s debt.   Also, Americans have shown that they would rather see their lawmakers focus on creating jobs than on cutting costs, at least according to a new New York T’imes/CBS News Poll.

The poll found that a shocking 82 percent of Americans disapprove of the way Congress is doing its job.  This is the highest disapproval rating in the history of the poll, which started in 1977.  Four out of five Americans said that the debt ceiling debate was more about gaining a political advantage than about doing what’s best for the country.  Nearly 75 percent of respondents claim that the debate did harm to the image of the United States around the world.

Rev. Jesse Jackson Says President Obama Wasn’t Tough Enough During Debt Talks

The Rev. Jesse Jackson had a few things to say about the recent debt crisis. Jackson claims that President Obama should have been “tougher” with the Republicans and less willing to compromise.

“He has a propensity to be trusting, on the side of reconciliation,” Jackson said to POLITICO. “He kind of underestimates how ideological these guys are and how determined they are to destroy him.”
